I remember these! For some reason I always associate them with Mayorga cigars (and coffee). I think JR used to feature both regularly in the big, glossy catalogs they use to send me. Was Maria Mancini a JR house brand? I don't recall seeing them anywhere else.

I must agree with your summation of these cigars. My results are the same. Although, I had no problem keeping them lit. My beverage / spirit of choice with a MM is Crown Cask 16 or a nice single malt scotch. Of course, a Duvel does quite nicely!!!
long ashes,

The 'funny' name of this cigar (Magic Mountain) has an easy explanation: in the famous novel by Thomas Mann, Der Zauberberg –Magic Mountain– the protagonist, Hans Castorp, smokes only Maria Mancini cigars. (Those, however, were made in Bremen, Germany).
Nevertheless this explains the 'funny' name

[...] Regardless of the fallacy society developed that cigars are only for the rich and elite, stogies are for Jane Doe and John Everyman just as much as they are for Fidel Castro and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Many wonderful cigars cost less than the price of a Miller Lite at your local pub, and they’re sure to last much longer. Case in point: StogieGuys.com has already provided you with reviews of two very respectable cigars (see here and here) that cost less than $3 a smoke – and there are many more to come.
