Quick Smoke: Bucanero Don Douglas Belicoso

2 Aug

Each Saturday and Sunday we’ll post a Quick Smoke: not quite a full review, just our brief take on a single cigar.

While I enjoyed Bucanero’s Treasure and Cañon Cubano, this is definitely my favorite blend from Robert Spoden’s impressive boutique outfit. The 6 inch by 54 ring gauge Belicoso boasts creamy notes of oak and spice and a wonderful burn with a finely layered white ash. If you let the $6-7 per stick price prevent a purchase you’ll miss out on a great cigar.

Quick Smoke: Bucanero Treasure Belicoso

18 May

Each Saturday and Sunday we’ll post a Quick Smoke: not quite a full review, just our brief take on a single cigar.

In January, Robert Spoden of Bucanero Cigars told us about his company’s philosophy of focusing its resources on making great sticks, not marketing. The six inch by 54 ring gauge Treasure Belicoso is a good case in point. This Costa Rican puro boasts a smooth, leather-like flavor and excellent construction. You can expect to pay between $90-100 for a cedar chest of 16.

Quick Smoke: Bucanero Cañon Cubano Maduro

Bucanero Cañon Cubano Maduro

Big, black, and bold, this five and ½ inch by 60 ring gauge Bucanero behemoth packs rich, textured flavors of dark chocolate and burning timber. The Nicaraguan, Honduran, Italian, and Costa Rican blend is full-bodied and well-balanced. With decent construction – including a fairly even burn for its large girth – I can recommend this at $7 a pop.

Verdict = Buy.

Quick Smoke: Bucanero Full Sail

12 Jan

Each Saturday and Sunday we’ll post a Quick Smoke: not quite a full review, just our brief take on a single cigar.

This box-pressed toro is a tightly-rolled maduro featuring a flawless Nicaraguan wrapper. As per Robert Spoden’s advice, I enjoyed it with a glass of red wine (a nice Rhone) and found it a perfect accompaniment to this cigar’s full-flavored spiciness. It had a real kick, but it was never unpleasant or harsh. With its perfect construction, I can definitely recommend the Full Sail.

Verdict = Buy.
