Quick Smoke: Paul Garmirian Reserva Exclusiva Robusto

10 Feb 2007

Each Saturday and Sunday we’ll post a Quick Smoke: not quite a full review, just our brief take on a single cigar.

I was a little disappointed with this five inch by 50 ring gauge Robusto from real estate mogul turned cigar manufacturer Paul Garmirian (often just called a PG). The draw is loose, the burn too hot and uneven, and the flavor unreasonably harsh. To top it off, the cigar has a knack for going out – even when you take the requisite number of puffs. With these unwelcome traits, and a retail price of about $9 apiece, I wasn’t terribly pleased, especially since I enjoy so many other PG creations.

Verdict = Sell.

This is a shame… I've always heard good things about PGs.

Sorry to hear that you found it unsatisfactory. Since we use 5-10 year old tobaccos, the construction and burn is going to be different, much like a cigar you've aged for many years. The Reserva Exclusiva was created to be richer and stronger than the regular PG, the Gourmet Series. I would try one of those, as it I think you would enjoy it.

Wouldn't it be "Take a pass on THESE five inches" instead of this? Maybe you should keep your day job.

    Hey ESLMan!

I am so glad I don't work for you (or with you), one grammar mistake and you are gonna fire me and send me to school for English as a second language.

Next time why don’t you just use the contact page from the sidebar and kindly notify them of the error.

Maybe ESLMan and zBob should both leave the grammar up to the Stogie Guys. As a fourth grade English teacher, I can tell you Patrick A was right.

"This" refers to "Robusto." You wouldn't say "these Robusto." The "five inch by 50 ring gauge" clause does not determine the number of Robustos.

Jeez. One guy gives his honest review of a cigar and everyone jumps all over him.

Thanks for grouping me in with ESLMan there Mandy, if I was jumping all over someone it was definately not Patrick.

To be honest I did not review the so called grammar mistake, I was just pointing out a much nicer way for him to make those type of suggestions. In my opinion the comments left here should be pertinent to the review and not typos or grammar. Especially if the Stogie Guys make the change then your comment won't make any sense when a new reader comes along. Which could be what is going on right now…

    I appreciate everyone's comments.

K Garmirian- I have enjoyed other PG smokes and I plan to write about them soon. You might want to check today's review of the Artisan's Selection No. 4, for example.

ESLMan- I suppose I appreciate your very public way of trying to correct my writing, but the fact of the matter is you're wrong. See Mandy's comment for an explanation.

zBob- Thank you for trying to point out the appropriate way to alert me to a typo. You're right: These comments should focus on the content of the review.

[…] Five months ago, I wrote an unflattering Quick Smoke of the Paul Garmirian (PG) Reserva Exclusiva. The honest critique – which was based on four or five Robustos – received some interesting comments from loyal readers, a fourth grade English teacher, and someone claiming to be from PG. […]
