Quick Smoke: La Unica 500 Maduro
11 Nov 2007
Each Saturday and Sunday we’ll post a Quick Smoke: not quite a full review, just our brief take on a single cigar.
La Unica cigars are easy to find. Many shops stock them to provide a cheap smoke from a well-known maker. The Fuente-made cigars have been around for more than 20 years since their introduction as a “premium†cigar offered in bundles rather than boxes. The maduro I smoked recently, a five and 1/2 inch by 42 ring gauge, had a rough wrapper, a couple of large veins, and little prelight aroma. Unfortunately, that seemed to foreshadow the smoking experience: uneven burn, harsh smoke, and little taste. I paid less than $3, so there wasn’t much investment. But there wasn’t much return either.
Verdict = Sell.

Stogie Guy! I almost choked to death trying this cigar. I thought I would check it out at the local smoke outlet up the street. A very cheap cigar, and this one proves you get what u pay for! Good thing it wasn't my first experience. Still looking for a review on the Cocinero Liga Especial? I smoked a Cocinero Corona with a friend of mine recently, and for me, it was a very smooth smoke…I would love to hear what you think about the Liga Especial…

Haven't tried the Cocinero Liga yet, although I have enjoyed the original Cocinero.
I bought a bundle of the La Unica maduros about 3-4 years ago and I have smoked through all but a few… they don't have much flavor and are very mild, also, they don't really improve much with age. Most of the bundle was very tightly rolled, not unsmokeeable but a lot of effort to smoke for sure. I definitely wouldn't invest another $50 on these cigars again. Fuente has a very well respected name in the industry but I haven't been impressed with much of his value priced stuff. I guess when you make 35 million cigars a year it's hard to pay close attention to your lower priced products.
