Quick Smoke: Petrus Reposado No. 7000

26 Apr 2008

Each Saturday and Sunday we’ll post a Quick Smoke: not quite a full review, just our brief take on a single cigar.

Petrus

The name Petrus carries a lot of weight in the world of fine wines, and while I realized Petrus cigars (by Felipe Gregorio) bore no connection to the French chateau, my expectations were high. Calling a cigar Petrus is like calling a boat Ferrari; intellectually, you know there’s no real connection or guarantee of quality, but, emotionally, you make that connection anyway. Unfortunately, I should have listened to my brain on this one. The burn here is horrendously uneven, the packing is loose, and the flavor is bitter and unbalanced. Very disappointing.

Verdict = Sell.

    I couldn’t agree more with your assesment of this cigar. I also had high expectations………….

    The presentation was visually appealing and the wrapper had a nice almost bluish hue! However smoking the cigar was a very unpleasant experience to say the least. While the exterior of the cigar attracted me to purchase the interior had some obvious construction flaws-Uneven burn, very loose, and extremelly bitter finish- I will not be purchasing this cigar again.

    note to self: What do you expect from a cigar that can be purchased for $25 a box. Thats $1.25 PER STICK. I consider myself a value buyer but there is a limit when you cannot compromise taste.

    Thanks for the writeup. You could have wrote – "Just terrible!" and got away with it.

    I also had the same experience with the Petrus, except I had the 6000. I first noticed a disparity within the 10 I received. Some had a dark wrapper, while others were very light in color. That is a concern if you are trying to maintain quality control (consistent taste). Not to mention that when I lit it up, there were a few holes in the cigar (beetle larvae hatched and had a snack).

    Jack, I got a bundle of 10 for about $20, so you got a good deal, but even at $1 a stick stay away from these.
