Quick Smoke: Oliva Serie V Lancero

7 Sep 2008

Each Saturday and Sunday we’ll post a Quick Smoke: not quite a full review, just our brief take on a single cigar.

I like lanceros. So when I saw this 7 inch Serie V I had to give it a try. I used a V-cutter and a conventional butane lighter, fearing a torch would be too much for the 38 ring gauge foot. It drew fine from start to finish and produced lots of smoke. I was disappointed, though, in the flavors. The cigar just wasn’t as smooth or as tasty as other Olivas I’ve enjoyed. Perhaps there’s too much of the Habano Sun Grown wrapper relative to the Nicaraguan filler. I recommend other vitolas—Cigar Aficionado named the Torpedo the fourth best cigar for 2007—in this high-quality line.

Verdict = Sell.

    Hmmm…I happen to disagree. I find that this is one of the best vitolas in the line. Maybe I'm just a fan of this wrapper, but everyone has a different opinion. Its a good line of cigars, and anyone can find a favorite vitola.

    Jason – It is interesting how the size can affect the taste. Erik Espinosa remarked the other night at an event I attended that he believes shorter vitolas tend to be stronger. I agree that the Oliva V is a terrific line and anyone who enjoys full-flavored, tasty cigars can almost certainly find one they'll like
