Quick Smoke: Toraño Exodus 50 Years Blend Torpedo
9 Jan 2010
Each Saturday and Sunday we’ll post a Quick Smoke: not quite a full review, just our brief verdict on a single cigar of “buy,” “hold,” or “sell.”
This dark blend is a beautiful creation that, as my colleague wrote of the Salomon, is rolled in memory of the Toraño family’s 50-year exile from Cuba. Typical of Toraño’s propensity for multi-nation blends, it sports a Brazilian arapiraca sungrown wrapper, a binder from Honduras, and Nicaraguan filler from Estelí and Pueblo Nuevo. I’m a little surprised the wrapper doesn’t create more spice. In the Torpedo (5.5 x 52), leather is the dominant taste, highlighted by some cocoa and toast. I’d rank it below the Silver—my favorite Toraño—but recommend a spot for the Exodus 50 Years Blend Torpedo on your to-try list.
Verdict = Buy.
I also really liked this stogie. It reminded me of a 1964 Padron Maduro. It didn't have as much "refinement" to the smoke that the 1964 does, but at a much cheaper price (the Torano costs about $7.50 where I live) I am just fine with that when the budget is tighter.
I do recommend people try this cigar just for the fact that it is a medium bodied, rich cigar, with some complexity and not much spice.
I've only smoked one of these, but just put another in my humidor. I've seen others suggest this is a dessert cigar, but, in my opinion, you shouldn't save these just for dessert. They are too good.
Mighty – I haven’t smoked enough ’64 Padron maduros to make an apt comparison. But I can definitely see some of that Padron-like flavor in the 50.
The one I smoked of these was decent, kinda' threw me when I cut the tip a big stem was staring back @ me.
