Cigar News: New “cigarblogger.favorites” Sampler Pack Featuring StogieGuys.com

21 Sep 2011

[See details below on how to win one of the very first cigarblogger.favorites samplers.]

The announcement of a new sampler pack featuring cigars that have been on the market for awhile normally wouldn’t be big news, but the new “cigarblogger.favorites” sampler from General Cigar is different. That’s because StogieGuys.com recently participated in the creation of the first product based completely on the input of web-only cigar publications.

Back in January, we were approached by General Cigar to help select cigars for the industry-first “bloggers pack.” General Cigar was putting together a sampler featuring their Honduran cigars and wanted to base their selection on the opinions of cigar bloggers. With the understanding that all we would offer was our honest opinion, we welcomed the opportunity.

Also taking part in the project were A Cigar Smoker, The Cigar Nut, Toasted Foot, and Nice Tight Ash. Ultimately, based on our reviews of a dozen different Honduran blends, General Cigar settled on six cigars:

  • Uppercut by Punch – Toro (6.6 x 54)
  • Excalibur Legend – Conqueror (6.25 x 54)
  • La Escepcion – Gran Gener (6.25 x 54)
  • Hoyo de Tradicion – Toro Grande 6.25 x 54)
  • Excalibur Dark Knight – No. 1 (5.75 x 54)
  • Punch Gran Puro – Rancho (5.5 x 54)

The sampler pack, which comes complete with two tasting notes on each cigar from the contributing websites and QR codes that link to each site, will be arriving in cigar stores nationwide soon. Based on the “buy four get two free” label on the packaging, it should be priced to move.

To celebrate the launch, let us know your favorite cigar of the six in the comments and we’ll select one comment at random to receive one of the very first cigarblogger.favorites packs. (Fine print here.)

Further, winners of our weekly NFL Pick’em Challenge will be getting cigarblogger.favorites packs (one for each of the 17 weeks of the season), and we’ll also be giving a few away as part of our newsletter giveaway (sign up here for free to be eligible).

Punch Uppercut is a great cigar.. it has a mix combination of flavors like dark cherry, leather and coffee…

I'm partial to the Punches here, but I too will go with the Uppercut.

The Punch Grand Puro is still one of my favorite go to cigars, plenty of toasty flavor in every puff!!!

Punch Upper Cut is a tantalizing and tasty stick that offers a consistency with every smoke… I enjoy it as much as reading your blog every week!

I haven't yet had any of these six, though I'm most interested in trying the Uppercut. I have, however, enjoyed the Punch Grand Cru No. 2 Maduro and the Punch Pita EMS Toro was pretty decent, too.

Is anything General produces really a "favorite?" 🙂

Greetings and thanks for the contest. I would like to try the Excalibur Dark Knight, the name alone intrigues me.

I think I'd have to go with the Punch Gran Puro or Uppercut. Haven't had either one in a long time, but I'd say they are the best of the Punch brand.

My favorite is the Hoyo de Tradicion. Thanks for the contest guys

Both of the Punch are terrific smokes.

I have always been a big fan of the Punch Grand Puro. As a matter of fact, that was my first ever box purchase. By far my favorite General cigar.

  13. Anthony Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 12:32 pm #

I would go with the Excalibur Legend. Thanks guys.

  14. Tim Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 2:47 pm #

Cool idea. The Hoyo de Tradicion gets my vote.

  15. Derek McDaniel Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 5:42 pm #

The Punch UpperCut would be my first. But looking at the Dark Knight makes me want to try one.

  16. Nick Holloway Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 5:56 pm #

Of the cigars on this sampler, the Punch Upper Cut would be my favorite.

  17. Nick Holloway Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 6:02 pm #

It'd have to be the Punch Upper Cut.

  18. Swede214 Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 7:37 pm #

Nice contest, thanks, my choice is the Hoyo De Tradicion

I would have to agree with Ashburn Dave……General Cigars just don't put out anything that unique. If I had to pick one, it would be the Punch Uppercut.

Really wish General would put out a cigar that doesn't taste very similar to most of their other ones. Who knows what they'll do with the CAO blends. Only time will tell on that one.

Although I'm a Torano fan, I love the idea of smoking a true puro. The Punch Gran Puro gets another nod here.

  21. Keith1911 Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 9:23 am #

I would say that the Excalibur Legend is my favorite out of those.

  22. manos Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 9:51 am #

Great contest and a very cool sampler!I'd go for the Hoyo de Tradicion.

  23. Lawrence Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 9:55 am #

Uppercut is awesome….it got some time to age and they are fantastic!!!!

  24. Tony Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 1:20 pm #

I haven't tried any of those so I can't say what my favorite is.

  25. @czerbe Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 3:51 pm #

Uppercut is my pick out of that bunch, they are one of my Fav. from General

  26. @porkdaddy14 Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 8:59 pm #

The Hoya de Tradicion is the only one I've tried. I enjoyed it. I've wanted to try the Uppercut, but I find all of the sticks in this sampler exciting.

  27. Hyland Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 9:07 pm #

I'm in for the Dark Knight

  28. JoshK Friday, September 23, 2011 at 2:36 pm #

I haven't tried them all but based on the reviews it seams Hoyo de Tradicion would be my favorite of the bunch.

  29. Eric Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 12:20 am #

My favorite of the bunch is hands down the Hoyo de Tradicion – Toro Grande – perfect balance and enjoyable any time of the day. Punch Gran Puro is a close runner-up, but not quite there.

I have only tried the grand puro so my experience is limited but it is a delightful smoke, that I thoroughly enjoyed. I do look forward to adding all of these cigars into my humidor in the very near future.

I haven't tried any of these yet, but have been meaning to pick up an Uppercut try out.
