Contest: Buy Cigars, Win Cigars!

I think it was Woody Allen who said 80 percent of life is showing up. Well, I got part of my percent the other day when I won a box of Di Fazio Picoso Torpedos from The Cigar Station last month for what I believe was the electronic equivalent of showing. I registered at the site, which plays music, interviews, and other cigar-related material.
I’ve smoked a couple, and they’re nice cigars—spicy, well-made, and smooth. Di Fazio is a relatively new company, starting operations in 2008 with headquarters in Miami. The Picoso is made in Honduras, and I wrote a Quick Smoke on the Churchill last year.
I thought I should share my good fortune, so we’ve cooked up another contest to give StogieGuys.com readers a chance to win a Picoso five-pack. The goal of this contest is to support the backbone of our hobby: the cigar shop. All you have to do is leave a comment on this post that includes this sentence:
“I will buy a cigar in person at a cigar shop the next time I get a chance.â€
For most of us, that’s a pretty simple promise. Some of you, though, live a long way from a B&M. That’s OK. We trust you. If you say you’ll do it, you’ll do it, whether it’s tomorrow or two years from now. You’re all on the honor system.
Here’s the fine print: Please enter only once. Include an email address so we can contact you to get your mailing address if you win. (If you’re concerned about spammers, feel free to wrinkle it up by spelling “@” or writing .com as “.cXX”. Just don’t make it so clever that we can’t figure it out.) I will buy a cigar in person at a cigar shop the next time I get a chance. In fact, I live on an island, where the best cigar selection anyone has is pathetic. Less than pathetic. A trip to the nearest mainland B&M is about 2 hours and $20+ in gas and ferry fare, but any excuse I get, I go. The shop carries a good selection, and that gives me a chance to support the store, which then also gives me a chance to try new smokes without having to buy 5, 10 or an entire box before I know if I like it. They've turned me on to several good cigars over the years, too. And any trip into Seattle gives me a chance to shop one of the best stores in the state (about 4 hours, and $30 in gas and ferry fare). Plus, I know both shops fight Washington's terrible smoke nazi laws and high taxes. Denis Leary once asked if we would some day only be allowed to smoke at night, under the covers, etc. It's almost that bad in WA. So, hell yeah, I patronize local shops, and will continue to do so until it's outlawed or I go broke.

Ordering cigars online is great in terms of affordability and selection but nothing beats the nostalgia of a classic cigar shop. My local shop provides you with comfort in the form of large leather chairs, wise-old stoogie aficionados, and the privilege of brandishing your own spirit to accompany your cigar. Buying cigars online by the box is too convenient but it will never replace the experience of settling down in a cigar shop with your Dad and enjoying the atmosphere surrounding a good smoke. I've been laid off for about 3 months now and I'm not in a position to purchase any cigars online or at my local B&M. But once I get back to work, “I will buy a cigar in person at a cigar shop the next time I get a chance.”
I'm one of those that lives a good ways away from a B&M. I try to attend an event at least once every 2 months. Sometimes, I can make 1 a month if I'm really lucky, i.e., the accountant in our house okays it =^p. So, I can say without lying, that I will buy a cigar in person at a cigar shop the next time I get a chance.

I have no problem with that at all. I find it a real treat to go into the humidor at a local B&M, peruse the variety of sticks and enjoy the aroma. It's all good!

I try my best to support my local B&M's. I use them to make my own "samplers" of stuff I want to try since most of the samplers you see online are 90% dog turds.
