Quick Smoke: Curivari Achilles Eternos

18 Dec

Each Saturday and Sunday we’ll post a Quick Smoke: not quite a full review, just our brief verdict on a single cigar of “buy,” “hold,” or “sell.”

achilles-eternos-1

After being nearly uniformly impressed by the cigars I’ve smoked by the Nicaraguan-based Curivari brand, I’ve been making a point of getting acquainted with their remaining offerings. Achilles Eternos, introduced in 2013, is a softly box-pressed torpedo (6.5 x 52, $9.50) utilizing all Nicaraguan tobacco, including an attractive light brown wrapper. Once lit, I was somewhat surprised to find flavors that can best be described as grassy and raw. There is also wood and roasted notes, but too often they were overshadowed by unpleasant vegetal flavors and a notable lack of balance. Even with adequate construction, I cannot recommend the Curivari Achilles Eternos based on my first experience.

Verdict = Sell.

Stogie Guys Friday Sampler No. 381

2 May

As we have since July 2006, each Friday we’ll post a mixed bag of quick cigar news and other items of interest. Below is our latest Friday Sampler.

Sindicato1) Sindicato, the first cigar outfit to be launched by a formidable “syndicate” of veteran tobacco retailers, is now shipping its new eponymous flagship cigar to hundreds of tobacconists. The line will be available in 6 sizes and sell for $10 to $14. Made at Casa Fernandez in Nicaragua, it will be a square-pressed Nicaraguan puro complete with a shade-grown Corojo wrapper. “Master blender Arsenio Ramos has combined this unique wrapper with a rich, bold Estelí double leaf binder, which encompasses a blend of strong, flavorful Jalapa and Estelí leaves and delivers a medium-full strength cigar with exquisite taste,” reads a Sindicato press release. Sindicato is headed by Jim Colucci, formerly EVP of sales for Altadis. The retailers who formed the company include Abe Dababneh (Smoke Inn in Florida), Dan Jenuwine (Quality Fresh Cigars in Michigan), Gary Pesh (Old Virginia Tobacco in Virginia), Robert Roth (Nice Ash Cigars in New York and Pennsylvania), and Jeff Borysiewicz (Corona Cigar Company in Orlando). Sindicato is also the maker of the Hex, Affinity, and Casa Bella lines.

2) Padrón Cigars turns 50 years old in September, and the company is celebrating with two new ultra-premium lines due out this fall. The first will be the Family Reserve 50, which will be made in small quantities yet become a permanent fixture in the Padrón portfolio. The second will be sold in 50-count quantities and packaged in special humidors. Only 500 humidors will be made, and only the owners of these humidors will be able to purchase 50-cigar refills once a year for up to 5 years.

3) Last Thursday, the FDA announced a proposed rule to regulate cigars that would devastate the handmade cigars we enjoy, and of course StogieGuys.com is on top of it. Read our primer on what the FDA deeming document means for cigars and also check out yesterday’s commentary on probably the most controversial aspect of the proposed rule, the $10 exemption for “premium cigars” and why it’s worse than you realize. We’ll have more in the coming weeks on this critical issue.

4) Inside the Industry: General Cigar announced the new 1907 by Dunhill, made with a Honduran Olancho wrapper, Dominican Olor binder, and Dominican Ligero and Brazilian Mata Fina filler; it will come in four sizes with suggested prices from $8.35 to $9.25. Drew Estate is adding a limited edition (2,000 boxes) Herrera Estelí in the Lancero size, available soon in 15-count boxes with a suggested retail price of $12 per cigar.

5) Around the Blogs: Stogie Review reviews a Camacho Diploma 11/18. Stogie Fresh fires up a Regious of London White Label. Leaf Enthusiast checks out the Davidoff Royal Robusto. Cigar Fan fires up the Ezra Zion FHK and Rodrigo Fortaleza. Cigar Inspector inspects the Curivari Buenaventura.

6) Deal of the Week: Emerson’s Cigars has pre-orders available on two new offerings from Tatuaje. Move quickly to pick up the new lancero sampler, which has ten Tatuaje blends each in a lancero size. Also available is the new Tattoo line. These are sure to go quickly.

Commentary: Random Thoughts from the Humidor (2013 Retrospective Edition)

23 Dec

In this special segment of Random Thoughts from the Humidor, I look back at 2013, its new cigars, and the lists we’ll use to judge them by.

Best of 2013 Lists

Best of 2013Now is the time for “Top Cigars of the Year” lists. Lots of them. In fact, a “List of the Best Lists” list is probably not far off. (We don’t have plans for one this year, but we reserve the right to change our minds.) They’re fun, but I don’t pay too much attention to them. Probably because I’m fortunate enough to try most new cigar blends that appear on various lists so I can draw my own conclusions. In fact, I’d estimate I’ve tried in excess of 50 new cigars this year (not including multiple vitolas of the same blend). If you feel strongly about whether we should compose a 2013 list or not, please let us know.

New Cigars… Lots of Them

In case you were wondering just how many new cigars there are, our friend Frank Herrera took a look at the number of trademarks that have been filed that include the word “cigar”. Filings have exploded. From early last century through the 1980s, trademark filings never averaged more than 100 a year, even though many more cigars were smoked at the beginning of the 1900s. This decade, they’re on pace for nearly 1,000 a year, a roughly 50% increase over the decade of 2001-2010. Besides being good for trademark lawyers, like Frank, I think it’s largely good for cigar smokers, too. More competition keeps everyone on their toes, and it lets newcomers try and create their own niches in the market with unique cigars that appeal to small subsets of cigar smokers.

About That Top 25 List

It’s hard to miss Cigar Aficionado‘s Top 25 list. It even generated CNBC segments, though curiously I don’t recall CNBC coverage in a year where the winner wasn’t a Cuban cigar. I looked through previous year’s CA lists, and I find that this one resonates with me far more than previous editions. With the exception of the top pick (the Cuban Montecristo No. 2), I’ve smoked all the blends in the top ten this year (and I’ve smoked plenty of Monte #2s in the past). Kudos especially to Aging Room (#2) and Buenaventura (#7), two under-the-radar gems that made the list.

Cigar Review: Curivari El Gran Rey Belicoso

10 Apr

El Gran ReyCurivari began making cigars for the European market, introducing its Selección Privada in 2003. Going head-to-head with Cuban cigars on their turf obviously was a gutsy move for a Nicaraguan cigar maker. But in only a few years, the company’s reputation was expanding about as quickly as its lines.

Now available in the U.S., Curivari cigars are among the most fervently sought boutique smokes by those on the lookout for something new. I heard good things about the brand long before I saw one. I tried a couple of times to get to their booth at last summer’s IPCPR Trade Show, but couldn’t get through the crowds.

My introduction to them came in an order from Atlantic Cigar Co., one of a few retailers with a selection—often with limited supplies or on backorder—of Curivari’s small batch lines. If there’s a shop in my area that carries them, I haven’t found it.

I’ve had just three: the El Gran Rey Belicoso (5.4 x 52), a Nicaraguan puro with a $9 price tag. I’m eager to try the other two El Gran Rey vitolas, as well as different Curivari lines (like the Buenaventura).

Although Curivari describes it as a “full-bodied cigar,” I’d call it more of a medium, with what I think of as traditional flavors, such as leather and oak. I didn’t find El Gran Rey to be particularly complex, but rather an expertly balanced and exceptionally consistent cigar.

Construction was excellent, the burn was nearly perfect, and the draw about as even as possible. They produce good smoke volume and the finish is long and deep.

Even after smoking only three cigars, I can see why this small manufacturer has gained such a large reputation. I’d urge you to seek these out, in addition to Curivari’s other lines. I give this “great king” four and a half stogies out of five.

Stogie Guys Friday Sampler No. 314

30 Nov

As we have since July 2006, each Friday we’ll post a mixed bag of quick cigar news and other items of interest. Below is our latest Friday Sampler.

1) Davidoff is celebrating 2013 being the year of the snake with a Davidoff 2013 “Year Of The Snake” Edition. The Churchill (7 x 48) features an Ecuador “701” wrapper around a San Vicente Seco binder and a combination of Piloto Seco, San Vicente Ligero, Piloto Viso, and hybrid 192 Seco/Yamasá filler. The cigar sells for $29.90 or $240 for a box of 8. Only 4,500 boxes are being produced.

2) Once again, Tampa’s cigar history comes alive with a festival celebrating the city’s rich heritage. Cigar makers, retailers, and food and drink vendors will be among those on hand for the Tampa Cigar Festival tomorrow at Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park downtown. It lasts from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a $5 admission fee. Part of the proceeds go to Southeastern Guide Dogs.

3) Inside the Industry: This year Nicaragua is expected to supplant the Dominican Republic as the top exporter of premium cigars to the U.S. despite lagging far behind the Dominican and Honduras only a decade ago. Habanos SA has named Walfrido Hernandez Mesa a co-president to serve alongside Buenaventura Jiménez Sanchez-Cañete.

4) Around the Blogs: Cigar Fan fires up an Ashton ESG 22 Year Salute. Stogie Review reviews La Musa by Emilio. Nice Tight Ash checks out a La Zona Espinosa. Tiki Bar kicks back with an Oliva Serie V Melanio. Cigar Inspector inspects a Fuente 8-5-8 Rosado.

5) Deal of the Week: Emerson’s Cigars is featuring a “Deal of the Year” with 20 cigars and a humidor for $99. Included are four each of the Vega Fina Fortaleza Toro, Trinidad Paradox Toro, Vega Fina Toro, Montecristo Platinum Toro, Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real Toro, and Montecristo Platinum humidor.
